Ethics CE for Massage Therapists: What You Need to Know

A guide to ethics continuing education for massage therapists. Covers why states require it, what counts, and how to pick the right course.

Most states require massage therapists to take ethics CE hours as part of their renewal. Ethics courses cover professional boundaries, client rights, informed consent, and scope of practice. Here is what you need to know about ethics CE.

Why do states require ethics CE?

Massage therapy involves close physical contact with clients. Ethics training makes sure therapists understand boundaries, consent, and professional conduct. It protects both the therapist and the client. That is why most states make it a required part of your CE hours.

How many ethics hours do you need?

The exact number depends on your state. Most states require 2 to 4 hours of ethics CE per renewal cycle. NCBTMB Board Certification requires 6 hours of ethics per 4-year cycle. Check your state board or our state requirements page for the exact number.

  • Professional boundaries and dual relationships
  • Informed consent and client communication
  • Scope of practice and when to refer out

Where to take ethics CE courses

ABMP, AMTA, and the Institute for Integrative Healthcare all offer ethics courses. Many are available online and self-paced. Make sure the course is approved by your state board or NCBTMB. Prices range from free webinars to about $50 for a full ethics course.
