How to Get a Massage Therapy License (2026 Guide)

Step-by-step guide to getting your massage therapy license. Covers education, exams, applications, fees, and timelines for all 50 states.

Getting a massage therapy license takes a few steps. You need the right schooling, a passing exam score, and a state application. The rules are a little different in each state, but the overall path is the same.

Here is what the process looks like from start to finish.

Step 1: Finish a massage therapy program

Every state requires you to graduate from an approved massage therapy school. Most programs are 500 to 1,000 hours. Some states set a minimum of 600 hours and others ask for 750 or more. The program should be approved by your state board or accredited by a national body like COMTA.

  • Program length: 6 months to 2 years depending on full-time or part-time
  • Cost: $5,000 to $20,000 for most programs
  • Covers anatomy, kinesiology, pathology, ethics, and hands-on techniques

Step 2: Pass the MBLEx exam

Most states require the MBLEx (Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination). It costs $195 and is given at Pearson VUE test centers. The test has 100 multiple-choice questions and you get 2 hours. You can study using practice tests and your school notes. If you do not pass, you can retake it after a waiting period.

Step 3: Apply for your state license

After you pass the MBLEx, apply with your state massage therapy board. Most states ask for your school transcripts, exam results, a background check, and a fee. Application fees range from $50 to $300. Processing time is usually 2 to 6 weeks.

After you get licensed: track your CE hours

Once you have your license, most states require continuing education hours to renew it. RubCE is a free app that loads your state rules and tracks your CE hours by category. It sends reminders before your license expires. Available on iPhone and Android.
